No visit to Dublin would be complete without seeing the Book of Kells, an ancient book that is from the 9th century and is a gospel manuscript that is famous throughout the world and is of great significance to the history of Ireland. The Book of Kells is kept in Trinity College Dublin and when you visit you will be able to take in much more than just this historic book.
The first part of your journey will take you through the “Turning Darkness into Light” exhibition that gives you a huge amount of background on the book and its history. This stage gives you the required facts before you go into the room that houses the Book of Kells itself. Here you will marvel at how intricate the designs in the book are as well as the preservation that has taken place to keep it looking so stunning. In this room there are other manuscripts of historic importance, these are particularly interesting for students and art lovers who are into Celtic patterns and designs.
From here you will go into the Long Room which has more than 200,000 books. This part of the visit is truly awe-inspiring (and is believed to be the inspiration for many fictional libraries, such as the Jedi Library featured in the Star Wars movies) and will astound you as you look up at the oak bookcases that seem to cover every inch of the room. A visit to TrinityCollege is the best way to see this relic up close and it offers a great introduction to the Book of Kells before you go through to view it in person.
